We’re excited to announce that our Smiles at Sea project was announced as the WINNER of the national 2019 Dental Awards for ‘Best Outreach or Charity Initiative’.
Dental nurse Katie Rowe, who operationally led our Smiles at Sea project, and Head of HR Tina Allen attended the glittering awards ceremony on Friday 17th May at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel, and they were thrilled to receive the award saying: “This was a hotly contested category with such inspirational initiatives shortlisted, all reaching out further into their communities to make a difference to people’s oral health. But our Smiles at Sea project clearly captured the hearts and minds of the judges, as well as those around us on the evening, and we are so proud and privileged to have won”.
The Dental Awards is the industry’s longest-running and most prestigious award event. 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of the awards, which each year attracts numerous entries from those working in dentistry. Running alongside the Dentistry Show where Smile Together were also exhibiting, each category is judged by an expert panel of judges.
Each year Smiles at Sea sees us take a mobile dental unit to fishing communities across Cornwall and Brixham who rarely get to see a dentist due to the demands of their work – in 2018 70% of those we saw hadn’t seen a dentist for at least 5 years.
A genuine partnership initiative, Smiles at Sea is delivered by Smile Together in collaboration with the Sea Hospital Society, The Fishermen’s Mission and Healthy Cornwall. Plans are now underway for Smiles at Sea 2019 which this year starts on 9th September and runs until the end of the month.
